IDA Awards 2008 Reveals Nominees

Short Film News (SFN) - The nominees for the International Documentary Association's 2008 IDA Documentary Awards competition were announced today, including five shorts, five features, and eight series.

Winners will be feted on December 5th at the Directors Guild in Los Angeles, in a ceremony hosted by Academy Award nominated documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock.

Kassim The Dream by Kief Davidson, Man on Wire by James Marsh, Stranded: I Have Come From a Plane That Crashed on the Mountains by Gonzalo Arijon, Waltz With Bashir by Ari Folman, and Young@Heart  by Stephen Walker have been nominated for Distinguished Documentary Achievement in IDA's feature category.

The five nominated short films are: Kick Like a Girl by Jenny Mackenzie, La Corona by Amanda Micheli and Isabel Vega, Redemption Stone by Tom Dziedzic, Smile Pinki by Megan Mylan, and Tongzhi in Love, by Ruby Yang.

La Corona was nominated for last year's Best Documentary Short Academy Award, while Smile Pinki and Tongzhi in Love currently reside on this year's Oscar shortlist.

In the Limited Series category, the four nominees are: CNN Presents: God's Warriors, The Jewish Americans, The War, and Sin City Law, while Nova, American Masters, This American Life and Wide Angle are Continuing Series nominees.

This year's IDA Career Achievement honoree was previously announced as Encounters at the End of the World and Grizzly Man director Werner Herzog.

Other career awards to be handed out at the ceremony include: the Pioneer Award to filmmaker Rob, the Preservation & Scholarship Award to UCLA professor, author, and filmmaker Marina Goldovskaya, and the inaugural Avid Excellence in Editing Award to editor and filmmaker Sam Pollard.

The Jacqueline Donnet Emerging Filmmaker Award will go to helmer Stefan Forbes.
