
Short Film News (SFN) - Gianfranco Rosi's documentary Below Sea Level won the main competition prize of the 11th One World Human Rights Film Festival in Prague.
Rosi's film, which has won Cinema du Reel and Venice Festival's Horizons Awards, is about US/Mexican border life, and he received his prize from Czech Minister of Culture Vaclav Jehlicka.
The prize for best director went to the Czech filmmaker Jana Sevcikova for her movie Gyumri. Grand jury also awarded two special mentions to The One Man Village and Because We Were Born.
The documentaries in the Right to Know category were competing for the Rudolf Vrba Award, and the prize went to Pray the Devil to Hell. The jury also gave an honorable mention to the film The Sari Soldiers.
Burma VJ - Reporting from a Closed Country won the Vaclav Havel Special Award for a film that makes an extraordinary contribution to the promotion of human rights.
The Best Short Film prize was given to the documentary Three by Goran Devic. The jury also gave a special mention to the documentary Poison Fire.
The Czech Radio Award for the creative use of sound or music in a documentary went to Cocais, the Reinvented Town.
A student jury also chose the best film from a collection of One World films that were screened for students. This year, they chose Burma VJ - Reporting from a Closed Country.
One World Film Festival runs March 11 - 19.
