James Longley Talks about "Iraq in Fragments" in Tehran

Short Film News (SFN) - Iraq in Fragments by James Longley was screened in the first Iran International Documentary Film Festival: Cinema Verite and Longley talked about the film.

Mentioning his satisfaction of coming to Iran, Longley said he went to Iraq in 2002 for the first time and second time was 6, 7 months before Iraq war but he could not get the permission to make this film in these two trips. In February 2003, 20 days before the war began, he went to Iraq for the third time and started this film because he knew the U.S intended to attack and occupy Iraq.

His initial plan was to shooting the life of a family before and after the war but later it changed. He said the shooting took 2 years and, like Iraq people and all people in the world, he did not know what was going to happen. He was to make several short documentaries about different parts of Iraq to show the tribe variation in this country but this feature documentary derived from them.

Also he mentioned the reason he chose this name for his film was to tell us that this film shows only a part of life in Iraq and by watching it you would not know the whole Iraq. One of the limitations he had in making this film was not having permission to shoot everywhere and on the other hand he did not want to work with American army and he kept himself away from them.

He never arrested by Americans during making this film but sometimes he really felt endangered. He mentioned to decrease the expenses he was the director, the cinematographer, editor, sound mixer, producer and even music composer of Iraq in Fragments.
