Vesoul Fest Announces Winners

Short Film News (SFN)- The winners of the 16th edition of the Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema were announced. 

During the Closing Ceremony, Mr. Alain Chrétien, Vesoul Deputy Mayor, gave The Medal of Vesoul City to Mrs Aruna Vasudev, Founder and President of NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema), at the occasion of the celebration of 20th anniversary of NETPAC which opened at FICA 16th festival.

PALMARES 2010
GOLDEN CYCLO OF HONOUR sponsored by the City and Agglomeration of Vesoul to Iranian director Jafar Panahi and Iranian actress Fatemeh Motamed-Arya for their brave and talented commitment to freedom.

GOLDEN CYCLO Award, sponsored by the Conseil Régional de Franche-Comté and granted by the International Jury with Taiwanese director Wan Jen as Jury president and with Mrs Aruna Vasudev (India).

Mrs Serra Yilmaz (Turkey/ France) and Mr. Amer Alwan (Iraq/France) EX AEQUO:
"NO PUEDO VIVIR SIN TI" by Leon Dai (Taiwan), for its moving critic of bureaucratic failure and evocation of excluded people, a depiction neither sentimental nor aggressive.

"COW" by Guan Hu (China), for the originality of the director’s imagination in his use of small people and animals to underline the inhumanity of war.

International Jury GRAND AWARD :"THE DAMNED RAIN" by Satish Manwar (India) for the impressive maturity and restraint of a debut film with a potentially volatile and emotion-charged subject.

Special Mention: “ANIMAL TOWN” by Jeon Kyu-hwan (Korea), a powerful film with a topic directed with strength and calm.

NETPAC Award (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) represented by Mr. Jongsuk Thomas Nam(Korea), Ms Marjan Riahi (Iran) and Mr. Corrado Neri (Italy/France) :
“ANIMAL TOWN” by Jeon Kyu-hwan (Korea ) for its frank representation of the horrors in modern urban lives, with an experimental and sincere direction and actors’ daring actors performance.

Emile Guimet Award (granted by the Friends of National Museum of Asian Arts of Paris)
"NO PUEDO VIVIR SIN TI" by Leon Dai (Taiwan) for the courageous choice of black and white and the unconventional portrait of Taiwanese society and its minorities; a simple and very sensitive film, emblematic of New Taiwanese cinema.

Guimet Special Favourite: "SUPERMEN OF MALEGAON" by Faiza Ahmad Khan (India), a hilarious documentary on the relationship between Indian people and cinema, and between Indian cinema and the West, with funny and moving characters, deeply human.

INALCO Jury Award (granted by the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilisations, Paris):
“THE PAWN SHOP" by Milo Sogueco (Philippines) for its portrayal of the world surrounding the omnipresent pawnshops of Philippines.

Special Langues 'O’ Favourite: "THE DAMNED RAIN" by Satish Manwar (India) for its treatment of village life and farmer issues in rural Maharashtra.

Audience Award for feature films (granted by the city of Vesoul): "JAMILA AND THE PRESIDENT" by Ratna Sarumpaet (Indonesia).

Audience Award for documentary films (granted by the Commune of Vesoul): "THE KITE PLAYER" by Jean-Paul Mignot (Afghanistan/France).

Youth Award (granted by the Commune of Vesoul): "SUPERMEN OF MALEGAON" by Faiza Ahmad Khan (India).

High schools Award: "JAMILA AND THE PRESIDENT" by Ratna Sarumpaet (Indonesia).

The awarded films will be screened at Musée Guimet of Asian Arts, Paris, from 7th to 9th April 2010.
